If you are on a budget, join the other 99% of students around the world.  Students have not been left alone as many companies have taken advantage of this need and provide a great service for your benefit. We provide more than just a list of stores in your area, but also free clothes online, and shopping for clothes for that special occasion.

A typical university town provides more than enough cheap clothes shops for anyone's appetite.  The first key is to make use of the specials and sales in the large department stores.  If this is too much money for you, then rely on one of our topics below:

  Budget Shops
There are a number of shops around the world that survive off of peoples charity and donations.  The first few times you shop in these stores might actually be a little embarrassing, but they truly provide a great selection from underwear to toasters.

Shop with friends to avoid the initial shock.

Most items are from a buck to 5 US dollars.  If you see anything with double digits, you are in the wrong store... get out!  Also, look for pink tag sales or special days when certain items have reduced prices.  I furnished an entire house with phone, silverware, plates, pots for 4 people and clothes for one person for 29 buck US.  Yes, it is possible.  Suck up your pride, and step into another world of possibilities and a whole lot of junk.  Here are some very helpful tips when shopping and choosing stores:
  1. Go to the Big, Rich Cities .  You will find the highest quality clothes and items at budget shops in a rich area in a big city.  This is because those rich folks give away sweet stuff to make room in their 10,000 sq ft house for a swimming pool or something big.
  2. Don't go to the small stores .  Some small stores have good deals, but they are generally picked clean.  If you can find a shop the size of an airport, you scored.  The selection is huge, and they probably even offer cars out back.
  3. Find the sales .  As weird as it may sound, the Op (Opportunity) Shops even have sale days.  Look for a great item, and check to see if it will be on sale soon.  These sales generally occur in the larger stores.
  4. Try it on .  I know it only costs a buck, but the main reason a lot of items are given to these shops for free are because they are miscut, misshaped and totally disproportional.  Plus, most items are not refundable!
  5. Turn it on .  If you are going to venture into the unknown world of electronic purchases at Op Shops, make sure it works.  It might look good, but you will find that most items lack a crucial component that is needed for proper operation.

Below is a list of most of the top Budget Shops around the world who have listed their companies on the internet.  Otherwise, look in the Yellow Pages under Clothing:  Consignment, Retail, or Discount.

  Free Clothes Online
Yes, there is a silver lining on every cloud... but be weary.  Many people just want your email address so they can sell it to thousands of companies for a price who then bombard you with complete junk mail.  Therefore, go to one of these surfers choice free online email service

and sign up for a junk email address just so you can get your free stuff.  Cancel your email after you get your free stuff for the benefit of the email provider.

Here are some the best sites that give you free clothes .  Just remember that they are in no hurry to get you the items... expect 3 or 4 weeks.

  Proper Attire
When you do visit these Op Shops, try to be realistic in what you buy.  If you are buying for a Halloween party, your options are limitless.  However, if it for school, try to find something that you will feel comfortable with if you find yourself walking into a 300 student class... late!  Oh, the horror!  Even if you are wearing your favorite clothes, you still feel like a dork.  Choose carefully.

Here are some tips for buying entertainment clothes for University Parties.

Fact:  Alcohol influences judgment and balance.

When you have 200 drunk people dancing and stumbling around you, beer will inevitably be spilt on you.  Like bikini’s are made for mud wrestling, so partying consists of its own appropriate attire.

  • Never wear your best, new university clothes or shoes – they will be ruined!

  • Don’t wear your grungiest clothes – no one will talk to you.

  • Although plastic clothes are the preferred choice, as stains are removed with Windex, cheap cotton is a viable substitute.

  • Old street or sport shoes are suggested as beer and mud tend to gather in lumps on your shoes by the end of the night.  How?  I don’t know!!!

Don’t wear stuff that you would be bummed to lose.  Many house parties survive off of left behind items.  This is where cheap stuff comes in handy.  Never wear sunglasses!

Most shops give you a huge selection.  Swallow your pride and browse.  The clothes have been cleaned, so don't worry about trying them on and actually touching them.  If plaid, checkered, velvet or corduroy is your style, you will be heaven.

  Packing Tips
It is very easy to over pack for University.  If you think you are going to wear something, chances are you won't touch it.  Try and bring the essentials and nothing more as most University rooms are smaller than you think.  Here are some packing and buying tips:
  • Be sensible - My first year at uni, I only packed shorts and shirts with one sweater.  I soon found out that it rained a lot and ended up snowing.  Try to remember the climate.
  • Bring the Basics - Before packing your prom dress and your best dancing clothes, bring the basics.  If your clothes will require a lot of iron and special attention, you will be quickly overwhelmed.  Don't forget to be comfortable.
  • Be yourself - Buying a stack of clothes just because they are fashionable and are really not your style will make you uncomfortable.  People respect the nonconformist.
  • Good Ideas - There are a few clothes that just fit every situation: blue jeans and shirts.  They are versatile, fit in any situation, and will last throughout your Uni years.

Finding the right clothes once you are at Uni is not too difficult. In fact many stores cater to the poor college students.  Find these opp shops .
