  Literature Indexes

Below is a list of the best and most popular literature databases and indexes available on the internet.

  Literature Indexes
  • New York Times Books : In a very short time, the NYT Books site has become one of the most indispensible resources for readers on the net. Includes current reviews, special web features, and a complete searchable database back to 1980.

  • Authors @ The Mining Company : A very large list of practically every Author on the entire internet.  This is my first choice when researching authors.

  • The Voice of the Shuttle: Web for Humanities Research is probably the best index of resources for Humanities browsing on the net. Its Literature resources are especially useful, and the site is well maintained and updated often.

  • A Collection of On-Line Literary Research Tools maintained by Jack Lynch at UPENN indexes literary links by period.

  • The English Server at Carnegie Mellon University is the most utilized Internet humanities server, publishing 18,500 texts to over a million readers per month, featuring everything from cult theory to rhet comp.

  • Listz Searchable Directory of email Discussion Groups.

  • Bookwire is one of the best books sites on the web -- they host several book related periodicals, and sport one of the best indexes of book-related links to be found on the net.

  • Zuzu's Petals Literary Resource : If you're interested in writing, or reading, on the net, you should check out Zuzu: they've got everything, nearly, tons and tons of links for writers (and a lit mag too).

  • Bohemian Ink -- Chris Ritter's ever-improving guide to Beat/Modern/Contemporary/Coffeehouse literature.

  • The HUMBUL Gateway at Oxford is a well-maintained index of resources for the humanities.

  • The Argus Clearinghouse -- an index of link indexes (like this one) for specific subject areas -- a great research resource.

  • The Internet Public Library at the University of Michigan is a great general index of reference materials on the web.

  • The American Arts and Letters Network promises to become a great resource for scholars in the humanities -- the Network, funded by the Andrew Mellon Foundation, features a searchable index of resources by subject and (in the future) MUDD, MOOs, mediated chats and all sorts of other gizmos for high-tech learning activity.
